Andrew Schaefer, the Noah Harding Chair and Professor of Computational Applied Mathematics and Operations Research at Rice, is one of 12 researchers named 2022 fellows of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS).

Schaefer is being recognized for his “fundamental contributions to optimizing disease treatment decisions and optimization under uncertainty.” INFORMS limits fellows to 0.5 percent of its membership.

Schaefer joined the Rice faculty in 2015 after spending 15 years with the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. At Rice, he also serves as co-director of the new master’s degree program in industrial engineering. He earned his B.A. and M.A. in computational and applied mathematics from Rice in 1994, and his Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering from Georgia Tech in 2000.

INFORMS has more than 10,000 members from some 90 countries. Schaefer will be inducted during the 2022 INFORMS Annual Meeting held Oct. 16-19 in Indianapolis.
